How Much Does It Cost To Replace A Lost Title?
The cost of replacing a lost vehicle title in Tennessee is around $11. In Nevada, it is $20 to $35. With that said, there may be additional charges depending on your situation.
If you want to replace a title that has not yet been transferred to your name, for instance, you will need to pay for a change of ownership.
Or, if you bought a vehicle and it never came with a title, you will have to get a title bond to prove you are the rightful owner, after which you will have to get a bonded vehicle title.
Note: Title bonds and bonded vehicle titles are two different things, so as you can imagine, getting a title bond comes with its own cost, which varies per vehicle and state.
More About The Cost of A Lost Vehicle Title Bond
If you cannot find your vehicle title but have already proved you are the owner, it is usually easy to get a replacement. In some situations, however (one of which we mentioned above), you may be required to purchase a vehicle title bond before you can get a new title.
These situations include:
- The previous owner lost the vehicle title before you bought the vehicle.
- You own a very old vehicle that does not have a title at all.
- Your vehicle is custom-made.
- You purchased a vehicle that had no title or proof of ownership.
In these cases, it is the DMV that requires you to purchase a title bond before they issue you a bonded vehicle title.
The amount of coverage required for a title bond is set at 1.5 times the appraised value of the vehicle. So if, for example, the appraised value is $5,000, the coverage must be $7,500.
Usually, title bonds cost $10 for every $1,000 worth of coverage.
